Walkin' on Tundra...

These two feet were walking all over the Alaskan Tundra today...no really! In fact, I peed on the tundra (which was going to be my blog post title, but figured I'd be less crude, for once!). As for peeing on the tundra, it was in an outhouse, on the tundra, so yea it counts, especially when you consider that it's me...Miss I Hate Camping/Outdoor Peeing

Back to my adventures, because they certainly were that! It started as a planned drive out to the White Mountains with several stops along the way! First stop was to Pedro's, the site where he first found gold in 1902. In fact, when we stopped there were men panning for gold, it was really neat!

 

I did see a moose on the way out to the White Mountains, unfortunately it wasn't exactly the kind of moose I wanted to see...it was being "dressed" (I believe that's the appropriate term) on the side of the road. From now on I will be more specific with my requests to see wildlife and will mention "live" within that request!

With the various stops it took about 2 1/2 or 3 hours to get out to the White Mountains and Central AK. It was a beautiful day and great for pictures! I couldn't believe how desolate everything was. People actually live like this!! We didn't see a single store, gas station, anything for the whole drive until we got to Central, there was a restaurant, but it was closed...and for sale. If the lack of plumbing wasn't enough, the social isolation would completely do me in!

Honestly just trying to figure out if this was going to be a breeze or the mother bitch of all piercings. 12/26/17 Things I’ve googled today: is there arranged marriage in Bali Which then led to a very intriguing read about polygamy and how in certain areas in Indonesia it exists but usually only in the very poor, and the very rich (like high government officials and religious personnel) kind of makes you raise an eyebrow if it’s ok for the super well to do, but then viewed differently when the very poor do it. A status symbol for the rich men to take many wives. And a survival or barbaric and primal existence for those of a lower class. So interesting. I've also googled: How do American's buy property in Bali. Come to find out you can't technically have property in your name in Bali but there are 3 different and common workarounds to getting your dream villa. Hiking Hawaii (on acompressed schedule); Makapu'u Lighthouse, Manoa Falls, Waimea Falls, Dole Plantation

6/22/19 With only one weekend for fun stuff and exploring while in Hawaii on a business trip, I knew that I had to make the most of my very limited time. There was no doubt that hiking would be a major part of those plans! I had intended on waking up around 4:30 am and heading to Koko Crater to kick the day off, but a week full of battling jet lag finally caught me and sleep won in the end. Hike 1: Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail Starting a little later than planned (6:30am) I headed off to a my first destination, Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail. The drive from Waikiki to the light house was beautiful, along the coast, with several scenic stop offs that I took full advantage of, putting me even further behind schedule but with some added in Hawaii experiences too! This park opens at 7am (something I hadn't previously known) Makapu'u Trail is completely paved the entire way up. I wore my hiking shoes but would have been very happy doing it in my Chacos.
